Re: Name that Ant #144 (5 June 2011)

Obviously some sort of myrmicine... Is it a Myrmica or Manica???California has way too many ant species, and I hate myrmicines XD

I thought it was a harvester ant, but it wasn't.

You're a man after my own (myrmcological) heart, Jason -- Formicines rule! But how do we know this ant isn't from Poland?

I'll guess Manica rubida.  Of course, it would help if we knew where this ant comes from and how big it is.H

This might prove more difficult than I thought...

Re: Name that Ant #144 (5 June 2011)

If this is the North American west there can only be four different Manica species if I'm correct. I can narrow it down pretty close from that if this is in fact North America, so I will guess Manica...

Those could be Pogonomyrmex.  It really would help to know where they are from.H

Re: Name that Ant #144 (5 June 2011)

I'm thinking Messor smithi. The mesosoma of Pogonomyrmex is more blocky whereas these ants have an indentation in the mesosoma, plus these have rather large eyes for harvester ants.

Re: Name that Ant #144 (5 June 2011)

I think, based on general shininess, and apparently short propodeal spines, that this is M. smithi, but it is possible the pictures just don't show the spines well and this is the Santa Cruz Island...

I think Jason got it first. This is Messor smithi, photographed in Carrizo Mountains near Teec Nos Pos, Arizona. Good work!

Oh yay. Though antdude was the first of all of us to realize this was a harvester ant
